Auckland Island Piglets
2016年5月5日
We recently welcomed a bouncing pair of Auckland Island piglets.

They are the first offspring of a pair who were introduced from another reserve in 2016 to help increase the gene pool of this rare breed here at Staglands.

Auckland island pigs originate from The Auckland Islands, a group of sub-Antarctic islands, some 320kms south of New Zealand. Many animals were released on these islands in the 1800s with a view to feeding shipwrecked sailors. However DOC decided too much vegetation was being destroyed and that the eggs and young of ground nesting birds were at great risk. This resulted in the decision to eradicate all introduced animals on the island. An expedition to save some of the pigs was carried out in 1999 by the Rare Breeds Society, with some of the animals coming to Staglands.

Meet these little cuties in the Auckland Island Pig enclosure.
