Cafe & Main Entrance Redevelopment

Our existing infrastructure is more than twenty years old, and we have now outgrown it.  So, the time has come to future-proof Staglands for the next generation.

We are excited to share more details about our planned Cafe & Main Entrance redevelopment with you…

It is anticipated work will take approximately six months to complete, during which time there will undoubtedly be some disruption for our visitors.

We will aim to minimize this as much as possible to ensure visitors still enjoy their time at Staglands.

Stage 1: Starting in September to be completed by Christmas 2024

Our cafe will be significantly extended, with the following works planned:

• Increased seating inside for visitors.
• Expansive new decks leading to re-landscaped area in front of the café.
• Completely remodelled kitchen and serving area.

Impact on our visitors…

• The Café will have reduced service for approximately 2-3 weeks.
• The Café will then close temporarily whilst kitchen is being re-modelled (alternative catering options will be put in place during this time).
• Temporary Ticket Office will operate – please follow signage.
• Some paths will be closed – please follow signage.

Stage 2: To commence after completion of Stage 1…

We are constructing an expansive new entrance building with impressive 250 x 250 posts and trusses framing the entrance which has been designed to be reminiscent of a historic woolshed. This will house:

• A reception desk with membership and ticketing areas
• New Staglands visitor shop
• Staff office

Impact on our visitors…

• Temporary Ticket Office will operate – please follow signage.
• Some paths will be closed – please follow signage.

We very much look forward to sharing our new facilities with you in 2025.

Thank you for your understanding whilst we undertake this work.

One of the best places to go around Wellington, especially with kids! Lovely, very friendly and funny animals, beautiful surroundings. For the 3+ hours we spent there, we smiled and laughed as much as for the previous week? month? :-) Little historical area within the reserve is another remarkable spot.

The staff are very welcoming. The animals were super interactive, sometimes to an amusing extent (being followed by a guinea fowl horde was hilarious). The place is huge, and I think we saw about 98% of it. A beautiful array of feathered friends, fish and furry creatures. Was definitely worth the drive. I'll pop by next time I visit NZ.

Nowhere Town

Enjoyed wandering through and petting the animals. Great for a family visit, lots of good picnic spots if you don't want to go to the cafe.

100% recommend !!!! You get to pet a lot of animals ! I was hoping the pigs to be roaming around the grass area, but I was still able to pet them over the fence. It’s a huge reserve and got space to do picnics ! I would recommend giving yourself at least 3 hours to see everything ! They got other attractions like a train tour and apparently weddings too. You can walk along the river and feed trouts at the pond. A lot of birds just walking about so won’t recommend if you’re afraid of birds.

"Easy way to fill in a fun filled day with the children. Awesome set up, reasonable price, and can take your own lunch or eat in the Cafe. Perfect!"
